NDO – Overseas Vietnamese students can rest reassured when returning home to follow their international training programmes, Minister of Education and Training Phung Xuan Nha has affirmed. |

The minister was speaking at a conference on promoting opportunities for international education programmes in Vietnam, held at the Hanoi-based Vin University (VinUni) by the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) on July 21. While overseas Vietnamese students may be confused about what to do during the epidemic as they return to Vietnam to study, the mission of the domestic universities is to create favourable conditions for them to study in the best possible learning environment, Minister Nha said. On the other hand, this is also an opportunity for domestic and foreign universities to connect with each other, thereby offering quality training programmes, he added. Vietnamese higher education institutions have developed multiple quality training programmes in English and some other foreign languages with international accreditation. There are about 400 joint training programmes between Vietnam and over 30 countries across the globe. Several Vietnamese higher education institutions have been listed amongst the most prestigious in Asia and the world according to the well-known QS and Times Higher Education (THE) rankings. The conference offered an opportunity for educational experts and other relevant parties to discuss and promote the quality of the existing policies on international training linkage, Nha said, adding that overseas Vietnamese students can rest assured when returning to Vietnam to continue their international training as linkage programmes are at a similar quality to those offered abroad. In addition to over 400 joint training programmes, mainly in the fields of economics and management, there is a lot of room to expand such joint training to other fields, such as IT, software, biotechnology and tourism, all of which are necessary for Vietnamese human resource development, the minister stated. In addition, social sciences and humanities also have a lot of potential to expand training linkages to offer opportunities for international students to experience education in Vietnam, he added. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many higher education institutions around the globe have had to switch to online learning, while social restrictions in foreign countries have also greatly affected international learners, including overseas Vietnamese students. Meanwhile, Vietnam has been controlling the pandemic very well, offering favourable conditions for domestic universities to welcome back students and resume normal training activities. This is a good opportunity for Vietnamese higher education institutions to receive overseas Vietnamese students returning home to continue their international studies, and also to admit international students to study in Vietnam. Participants at the conference exchanged experiences in implementing international training programmes by domestic higher education institutions, by which making them ready to welcome Vietnamese students from abroad and international students to study in Vietnam during the complicated COVID-19 pandemic around the world. The conference also looked at the long-term goal of continuing to improve the quality of Vietnam’s higher education system through promoting the provision of international training programmes and a stable learning environment to enable Vietnamese students to “study abroad” on the spot. On the occasion, VinUni and the US-based Cornell University inked an agreement to deploy the “Study Away” joint training programme, offering Cornell’s international students who are facing difficulties returning to the US a chance to be admitted by VinUni to continue their online learning under Cornell’s programmes in Vietnam, while also having the opportunity to follow the “Discover Vietnam” programme at VinUni, featuring various cultural activities, business opportunities, startup programmes, research projects and software (hackathon) development contests.
